What is growth engineering?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Growth engineering is finding the one constraint that limits a business’s revenue, then building the fix inside the business, across sales, marketing, the website and the business model itself.

A growth engineer owns the outcome, not a deliverable.

Why the term exists

Most growth problems get sold as service problems. You need more leads, so someone sells you ads. Your site is old, so someone sells you a website. Each vendor fixes its own piece and measures its own piece. Nobody is accountable for whether revenue actually moves.

In tech companies, “growth engineer” usually means a software engineer on a product growth team. At Hunley Media Group in Louisville, we use the term for something broader: an operator who treats the whole business as the system, finds where it is actually stuck, and builds the fix with their own hands.

The difference is simple. The requested service is not always the required solution. Sometimes the website is the problem. Often it is the offer, the sales process, a broken phone number or a business model that stopped working.

How it works

How growth engineering works: diagnose, then fix

  1. 01

    Get inside

Meetings, numbers, and one customer traced from first search to repeat purchase.

  2. 02

    Find the constraint

Separate symptoms from causes. Name the one thing that has to change first.

  3. 03

    Build the fix

We do the work ourselves, across whatever the diagnosis calls for.

  4. 04

    Hand it over

A system your team can run without us.

Every engagement is different because we mold to the business, not the other way around. We optimize the architecture you already have, replace what is broken and expand what works.

Questions

Growth engineering FAQ

Is growth engineering the same as growth hacking?

No. Growth hacking is about clever, quick tactics to get attention. Growth engineering starts with a diagnosis of the whole business and fixes the constraint limiting revenue, which may have nothing to do with marketing.

Is a growth engineer the same as a fractional CMO?

No. A fractional CMO is a part-time marketing executive who sets strategy and manages vendors. A growth engineer is not limited to marketing and does the work directly.

How much does growth engineering cost?

At Hunley Media, growth engineering starts with the 30-Day Diagnosis, a $7,500 fixed fee credited toward the work. Engagements are scoped from the diagnosis.

Does growth engineering only work for tech companies?

No. Growth engineering works for any business with revenue and a problem nobody has solved. Hunley Media results include a hair salon, a tour company and an ad-tech firm.

Do we need our own technical team to work with a growth engineer?

No. A Hunley Media growth engineer does the work directly and hands you a site, a process, a solution or a system your existing team can run.
